Gordon isn't the only victim of this type of fraud — known as home-title fraud, land fraud, or seller-impersonation fraud — where scammers impersonate the rightful owner of a property by forging documents in order to sell it. Petrescu and Gordon share a few measures property owners can implement to help stop land fraud from happening to them. That may seem like an obvious one, but for a vacant piece of property, owners might forgo that extra security. He used the same title company to buy the land and to refinance it a year later. "Here we have the same title company that I used, and now the fraudster's using the same title company," Gordon said.

How to Take Care of Your Skin in the Fall and Winter
  + stars: | 2023-09-25 | by ( Anna Maltby | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As the outside air cools and the heat starts to crank on indoors, you may notice your skin becoming flaky, maybe even a bit itchy. Welcome to fall and winter. When temperatures drop, the air gets drier — both indoors and outdoors — and moisture gets pulled from the lipid barrier. With less hydration, the turnover of skin cells is impaired and they start to clump together, which people can experience as dry, flaky or even scaly skin, Dr. Craiglow said. Some are more susceptible to developing dry skin in cooler weather, particularly older adults and those with eczema, said Dr. Jeffrey Weinberg, a clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., August 15, 2023. All three posted weekly losses, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq registering their largest Friday-to-Friday percentage drops since March. On Thursday, the S&P 500 dipped below its 100-day moving average - a key support level - for the first time since March, Its failure to break above that level suggests the index is still under downward pressure. Among the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, consumer discretionary (.SPLRCD) suffered the steepest percentage loss, while tech (.SPLRCT) and energy (.SPNY) were the only gainers. The S&P 500 posted one new 52-week high and 35 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 33 new highs and 321 new lows.

However, most Crop Watch fields no longer benefit from rain as far as yield is concerned. Most Crop Watch producers have either not yet started corn or bean harvesting or are in the beginning stages. About 30% of the Crop Watch corn in southeast Illinois was completed on Sunday, and the early results would suggest downside to yield expectations rather than upside. Average Crop Watch soybean yield rose slightly to 3.59 from 3.57 a week earlier after a quarter-point bump in North Dakota. Like many PeerStreet investors who spoke with Insider, Mincher has a strong résumé. Another form of crowdfunding, equity crowdfunding, works a bit like the stock market without the onerous and expensive process of initial public offerings. The PeerStreet investors who spoke with Insider said the outcome of this case could determine whether they stick with real-estate crowdfunding. Others, such as Fundrise, have moved away from crowdfunding in favor of a model for private real-estate investment trusts, similar to the BREIT later offered by Blackstone. Fritton, the former Patch of Land CEO, said Fundrise's fund model was the wave of the future for real-estate crowdfunding.

The Pittsburgh-based company formed in 1901 as a merger of the nation’s leading steel companies — including Carnegie Steel Corp. — and was engineered by financier J.P. Morgan. But, in recent years, US Steel’s fallen far below other American steel companies in steel output and stock market value. That compares to 14.49 million metric tons from US Steel, including its operations in Europe, which rank 27th in the world for 2022, according to the World Steel Association. Crop Watch corn and soybean fields were stressed last week under mostly dry conditions, but multiple rounds of rain over the weekend prevented yield expectations from declining. Last week’s Crop Watch rain totals were mostly concentrated over the weekend, though not all areas received the needed soaking.
